STLN2351 Engaging STEM using Lego (primary)

Description:
The success of STEM activities occurs when students can engage their thinking skills and pair it with creativity to problem solve and explore familiar and unfamiliar concepts. Teaching STEM can be incredibly fun and rewarding, however teachers sometimes find that incorporating STEM into the schedule can be difficult. TV game show contestant and Lego fan Ryan Evans will outline some simple strategies for using building materials in the classroom to engage students and encourage the development of experimentation and critical thinking. By focusing on how the teacher can provide thought provoking questions and appropriate prompts when completing building challenges, the method of using STEM thinking principles can become a part of the existing curriculum instead of another add on activity.

  • 3.3.2 Use teaching strategies

Leadership - from challenging to coaching conversations

Communicating as a leader

Description:
In classrooms we are trained to ask high quality questions of our students, but as colleagues we don’t always feel confident asking high quality questions of our peers. Sometimes we don’t know what questions to ask and sometimes we are worried about creating tension by asking questions about the classroom work of a colleague. We do not want to create a challenging or difficult situation. We can learn to ask good quality coaching questions that create healthy dialogue about our teaching work in the classroom. That is the purpose of this session; to learn about a framework for asking good questions that challenge our colleagues to improve their teaching without being negative or judgemental. This will be a practical session in which you will be encouraged to trial the coaching questions framework.

There has been an increase in the numbers of students who are suffering from anxiety in today’s classrooms. Early reports suggest that this level of anxiety may increase as students respond to the COVID pandemic. Feelings of anxiety will prevent students from engaging in learning or achieving their potential. These barriers can be frustrating for the teacher and the student and can often lead to the student removing themselves further from the learning community. In this course the presenter will explore techniques that you can use when you are working with students who suffer from anxiety, helping you to re-engage the students while they deal with their condition.  An important session for teachers and it will also be helpful for Learning Support Officers working one to one or with small groups of students. Completing Managing the learning of students with anxiety will contribute 1 hour and 30 minutes of NSW Education Standards Authority (NESA) Accredited PD in the priority area of Student/child Mental health addressing standard descriptor 4.2.2 from the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers towards maintaining Proficient Teacher Accreditation in NSW.

  • 4.2.2 Manage learning and teaching activities

STLNL2367 Leading lesson observation and feedback models

Instructional leadership

Description:
Lesson observation and feedback can be powerful means of supporting teachers to understand and enhance their own teaching practice, but implemented poorly they can be destructive to cultures of trust within schools. Models such as Quality Teaching Rounds have demonstrated positive signs of success in improving teacher confidence and efficacy across NSW schools and is now being investigated in other states including Victoria and Queensland. This workshop will explore the research behind observation and feedback models as a tool for teacher professional learning, using practical examples from the use of QTR and other observation models in different school settings. School leaders will gain insight into how to implement such models in ways that enhance both teacher practice and the professional learning culture of schools.

There will be a focus on ASD and ADHD. It is a practical, classroom focused course.  Completing Differentiation for students with a learning disability (ASD and ADHD focus) will contribute 5 hours of NSW Education Standards Authority (NESA) Accredited PD in the priority area of Students/children with Disability addressing standard descriptors 1.6.2, 4.1.2 from the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers towards maintaining Proficient Teacher Accreditation in NSW.
