Support students with complex needs through transitions

Understanding all learners

Description:
Students are required to move through many phases in a school day, from home to school, from one class to the next, from class to lunch breaks, from the classroom to special activities and excursions, from class to home; there are so many transitions. These transitions can be particularly difficult for students with complex social, emotional and behavioural needs; the students with whom ES staff are most likely to be working. The presenter, Belinda Webb, has broad experience and has worked extensively in Special Schools, where there is a strong focus on transition. Belinda will bring those transition strategies and the supporting knowledge to this seminar.

Standards addressed:

  • 3.2.2 Plan, structure and sequence learning programs
  • 2.5.2 Literacy and numeracy strategies

Course Length: 2 hours

Presenter: Belinda Webb

STLN2376a Connecting with disengaged students

Understanding all learners

Description:
It is rare for a Kindergarten child to be disengaged. It is a common experience among many primary children and adolescents. What happens in those intervening years and what is within the control of adults in a school to respond to the disengaged student? In this session the presenter will explore some of the reasons students become disengaged and then suggest different approaches, that can be used by Education Support staff, to re-engage those students in the learning community. The key, as with so many behavioural issues, is preventative strategies and then restorative approaches once things have gone awry.

Standards addressed:

  • 4.1.2 Support participation of learners

Course Length: 1 hour

Presenter: Megan Corcoran
